Transfer contents of old hard disk to new PC

A while ago my computer died of old age so I decided to treat myself to a new one. I removed the hard drive from the first PC as there are some files on it I want to retrieve. How can I transfer the contents of the old hard drive to my new computer?

Change a jumper on the back of the old drive to configure it as a Slave drive, then attach it to the spare plug on the IDE ribbon cable and a spare power cable. If necessary, temporarily disconnect the CD-ROM drive to free up the connectors needed to do this.

When you boot your machine the old drive should appear as the D drive and you will be able to transfer the files you want from it to the C drive. If you have a spare drive bay and spare connectors you may be tempted to install the old drive permanently in the new computer, but if it is very old its presence on the cable may slow data transfers to and from the new one.
